Oscar-nominated actor Andrew Garfield recently announced he will be taking a break after starring in several blockbuster films released in the past year. Throughout his busy career, Garfield has shown his wide acting range, especially in his portrayals of very different characters from the story. In fact, both of his Best Actor nominations came from appearances in a biopic.
His most recent Best Actor nomination was for his portrayal of acclaimed Broadway legend Jonathan Larson. Although the Oscar went to Will Smith for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard. Even though Garfield lost, there are plenty of movies on the Oscar-nominated list featuring him that are still worth watching.
Hacksaw Ridge describes the true story of a conscientious objector
The intensely graphic war film hacksaw crest earned Garfield his first Best Actor nomination in 2017. hacksaw crest focused on the true story of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector who served as a combat medic during World War II. Due to Doss’ beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist, he refused to carry a weapon while on duty. This led to his comrades torturing him in basic training and distrusting him in battle. Nonetheless, Doss proved to be a vital asset in the Battle of Okinawa.
Doss roped 75 men to safety over the sheer 350-foot cliff at Hacksaw Ridge. For his selfless efforts in combat, Doss was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Doss died in 2006 at age 87, two years after the documentary The conscientious objector has been freed.
Garfield initially disliked the social network
The 2010 movie The social network focused on founding Facebook in the early 2000s at Harvard University. The social network starred Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg and also starred Justin Timberlake and Garfield. Garfield portrayed Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Young students have been embroiled in scandals throughout the film, but despite Facebook’s infamous story, Zuckerberg has become one of the world’s youngest billionaires.
The social network was a massive box office hit, but Garfield initially disagreed with the other cast members about the film’s quality. Garfield was embarrassed by his performance and believed he had “ruined” the film.
Tick, tick… BOOM! Story told by Broadway legend Jonathan Larson
The movie 2021 tick, tick… BOOM! earned Garfield his second Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Jonathan Larson, the playwright, composer and lyricist behind Lease. Lin-Manuel Miranda Directed tick, tick… BOOM! in his debut as a feature film director. The film featured Larson’s writing process for his self-titled musical in the early 1990s and his relationship with his girlfriend.
tick, tick… BOOM! also included devastating issues, such as the AIDS epidemic, which affected several of Larson’s friends. Larson tragically died aged just 35 of complications from Marfan syndrome the night before Lease premiering off-Broadway.

Garfield’s Lesser Known Movie Breathe been released in 2017 and centered on the life of British disability advocate Robin Cavendish. Breathe also presented performances of The crown star Claire Foy and Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville. Cavendish – played by Garfield – contracted polio aged just 28 in Kenya and had just three months to live.
He had married shortly before his diagnosis and was now paralyzed from the neck down. Breathe followed how Cavendish forever changed the lives of people with disabilities and defied the odds when he lived to be 64. His son Jonathan even produced Breathe.
Garfield Underwent a Surprising Transformation for Tammy Faye’s Eyes
Garfield was virtually unrecognizable for his portrayal of Jim Bakker in the 2021 film Tammy Faye’s eyes. Garfield starred alongside Jessica Chastain – who won Best Actress for her role as Tammy Faye Bakker. The film followed Tammy through her career as a televangelist and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, Jim.
Tammy’s support of the LGBTQ+ community has created problems within her Christian television network. Tammy struggled to find work in televangelism until her death in 2007. Jim – who was jailed for fraud – attempted to return to televangelism. Despite Garfield’s acting hiatus, fans are anticipating his next film appearance, biographical or otherwise.
